Philip A. Kuhn 孔飛力八十高齡也已是第二代的漢學家了……其成名作 Rebellion and Its Enemies in Late Imperial China: Militarization and Social Structure, 1796-1864 《中华帝国晚期的叛乱及其敌人》对“叛乱的敌人”即镇压太平军的各种武装的分析篇幅远远超过了对“叛乱”本身的分析，这一视角在太平天国运动史研究中可谓独树一帜。
